Christmas Desserts: Try This Dutch Apple Crumble Recipe!
How would a classic British dessert taste, with a little elevation of the hero ingredient? With dutch apples taking the spotlight in this recipe, we’d dare say it makes quite the perfect sweet treat for your guests this Christmas! Dutch apples are known to give off a strong aroma and taste sweet and tart. Once caramelised —and paired with cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon — you can already taste the goodness in your mindedness! If you love spices, add cloves or cardamom for a little kick! Or you can go sweet all the way with a topping of vanilla bean ice cream for the dreamy pairing. Beyond Christmas, this dessert is also great for casual or important occasions such as birthdays, festivals or for the perfect accompaniment during teatime. Let's get started!  


For tart pastry
  175 g plain flour
  85 g cubed butter
  45 ml water
  salt to taste
For the filling
  1 tsp cinnamon powder
  1 tsp nutmeg powder
  1 lemon juice zested as well
  150 g plain flour
  1 tsp caster sugar
  1 kg dutch apples peeled and cored
For the crumble mixture
  200 g unsalted butter cubed
  1 tsp cinnamon powder
  1 tsp nutmeg powder
  200 g light brown sugar
  200 g wholemeal flour


To make pastry

Add the flour, salt
and butter to the bowl. Attach the K beater
and mix on a low speed until it resembles
bread crumbs.


With the machine still running slowly add the
water until a dough forms. Remove from the
bowl and wrap in clear film, leave to chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.


Remove the dough from the fridge and roll
onto a floured surface. Line four small pastry
dishes with the pastry and leave to rest in the
fridge for 30 minutes.

To make filling

Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, zest and juice of the lemon, plain flour and caster sugar. Attach the K beater and mix until combined, remove from the bowl and reserve.

To make crumble mix

Add the butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and wholemeal flour. Attach the K beater and mix on a medium speed until the mixture comes together, remove from the bowl and reserve.


Remove the pastry dishes from the fridge, slice the apples and divide between the dishes. Add the reserved filling mixture and top with the crumble mix.


Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes, until golden. Serve warm with the desired amount of cream or vanilla bean ice cream.
